Meet Scarlett Wells

Hi, I’m Scarlett Wells, and I run ClassyPlants.

I started this site because I was tired of plant care advice that assumed everyone had a greenhouse, a perfect south-facing window, and unlimited free time. I don’t. I live in a normal home with normal light, and I’ve killed my share of plants learning what actually works. The guides on this site are the resource I wish I’d had when I brought home my first pothos from a grocery store checkout line six years ago.

My Experience

I don’t write about plants I haven’t grown. Here’s what sits in my home right now:

  • 60+ species personally cultivated, including pothos, snake plants, monsteras, ZZ plants, calatheas, peace lilies, spider plants, fiddle leaf figs, succulents, and tropicals
  • Hundreds of propagation cycles — water propagation, soil propagation, and division methods tested side by side with honest notes on what fails
  • Pest management — mealybugs, spider mites, fungus gnats, and thrips treated and documented with before-and-after recovery timelines
  • Pet-safe plant research — verified against the ASPCA toxic plant database for cat and dog owners; I have a cat, so this is personal
  • Soil testing — custom mixes, store-bought blends, and amendments tested across multiple species and seasons

How I Write

I don’t rewrite manufacturer instructions or repackage press releases. I write from the plant’s perspective in my home:

  • If I say a snake plant can go three weeks without water in winter, it’s because I’ve done it repeatedly and tracked the results.
  • If I warn against a specific soil mix, it’s because I’ve smelled root rot at 2 a.m. and learned the hard way.
  • If I recommend a fertilizer, it’s because I’ve tested the results across multiple growing seasons and compared growth rates.
  • If I say a plant is pet-safe, it’s because I’ve checked the ASPCA database and, in many cases, lived with the plant near my own cat.

My goal is simple: give you advice that works in a real apartment or house, not a botanical garden.

Why I Started ClassyPlants

The site launched in 2020 after friends kept asking me the same questions:

  • Why is my pothos yellowing?
  • How do I save this dying succulent?
  • Is this plant safe for my cat?
  • What grow light actually works and isn’t a scam?

I realized most online guides were either too generic to be useful or too technical for beginners who just wanted to keep a plant alive. ClassyPlants exists to fill that gap – deep enough to solve real problems, simple enough to act on today.
